About the Beit Shemesh Running Club

The Bet Shemesh Running Club was formed in 2005 with just a handful of active local members and has experienced exponential growth ever since. The club includes runners of all different levels from those running their first 5k to experienced and competitive marathoners. Runners of every fitness level will find in the club an incredibly supportive and inspiring environment in which to pursue his/her individual fitness goals. Whether you want to challenge yourself by running a personal best marathon or simply jog to lose a few pounds, you will find similar minded people in the Bet Shemesh Running Club. Club membership is absolutely free as all of the many club functions are performed on a purely volunteer basis by the dedicated members of the club. We believe that the incredible health benefits, camaraderie and love of the land which characterizes our club should be accessible to everyone. The message has definitely been heard and we now have runners who join us from many places outside of Bet Shemesh such as Zichron Yaakov, Modiin, Tel Aviv, Efrat, Rehovot, Yad Binyamin and Jerusalem. Many runners who cannot make it to our workouts train with us virtually by following one of our many training programs.  The fact that so many runners maintain their affiliation with the club despite the fact that they don’t live in Bet Shemesh speaks volumes about the unique nature of the club.

The club participates in a number of signature events each year. Among these is the Tiberias marathon in January, in which a record fifty three Bet Shemesh runners participated this year. We also bring large contingents to the Bet Shean half marathon and the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv marathons as well as several other 10k races. In addition, the club sponsors a community 5k Run, which draws over 1000 participants, making it among the largest 5k in Israel.

The club meets four times a week for group runs. We meet every Monday night at 8:30 on the corner of Rechov Hanarkiss in Bet Shemesh for a high quality speed session tailored to sharpen us for whatever particular event we are training for at the time. On Friday mornings, we do our long run and these runs range from 12 km adventure trail runs during the off-season to 38 km runs to Rechovot during peak marathon training season. Saturday nights are for friendly and relaxed recovery runs. We use a Yahoo Groups email list to inform group members about the time and location of each run.

Marathon training for Tiberias begins in September. Club founder and Coach Chaim Wizman publishes a daily 18 week marathon training schedule designed to get you in the shape of your life. If marathoning is too extreme for you, Coach Chaim will be happy to tailor a personalized program to help you meet your goals. Each April, as the competitive season draws to an end, we embark on a series of breathtaking Friday morning runs entitled “Adventures in Trail Running” where we explore some of the many magnificent trails in the greater Bet Shemesh area. To find out more, call Chaim Wizman at  02-999-6317  or e mail at chaimwizman2002@yahoo.com Looking forward to seeing you on the roads and trails.
